The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said it will not tolerate lawlessness during marches planned by the ANC Youth League later this week.
The league plans to march from Beyers Naude Square in the Johannesburg city centre to the Chamber of Mines, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the Union Buildings.
The protesters are marching over economic freedom.
Violence erupted in August as supporters of Julius Malema protested against his disciplinary hearing at Luthuli House.
The ANC Youth League has been denied permission to use the N1 highway to march to Pretoria and an alternative route is expected to be made public on Monday.
